August 2020

During their regular meeting on August 4, 2020, City Council approved two ordinances related to the November 3, 2020 General and Special Elections.

First, Council approved an ordinance amending Ordinance 4141, which rescheduled a General Election for three Council members – Positions Four, Five, and Six – from May 2, 2020 to November 3, 2020. The election will be conducted jointly with Harris County, and the ordinance provides information regarding polling places and hours for Election Day as well as early voting as determined by the county.

Per the ordinance, early voting by personal appearance will be held from October 13-30, in accordance with the schedules adopted by Harris County. Call 713-755-6965 or visit www.Harrisvotes.com to determine voting locations for Early Voting and Election Day.

Second, the Deer Park City Council passed an ordinance cancelling the Special Election for the adoption of a Type B sales and use tax. The election was originally scheduled for May 2, 2020 and re-scheduled for November 3, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The vote followed a July 27, 2020 special joint meeting of the Deer Park City Council, the Deer Park Community Development Corporation (DPCDC) and the Parks and Recreation Commission to discuss issues relating to the Type B Special Election. During the July 27 joint meeting, City Manager Jay Stokes addressed several issues surrounding the November election date, and Assistant City Manager Gary Jackson provided insight into considerations related to the possibility of  reconsidering the November 3, 2020 Type B Special Election. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the possibility of cancelling the November 3, 2020 and rescheduling it to the uniform election date in May 2021 was discussed during the July 27 meeting.
